In this picture, the elephant is the individual chart, the soul, the cosmic blueprint: the whole of a person's karma and destiny. Each astrological tradition and occult science is a pair of hands, perceiving one facet of that reality through its own method.
Each seems to touch only a part. The reality they reach for remains one and indivisible.
Blind men and the elephant
Our philosophy begins with an ancient parable from the Indian subcontinent, with roots going back more than two thousand years. A group of blind men meet an elephant. One touches the trunk and calls it a snake, another the leg and calls it a tree, another the ear and calls it a fan, another the side and calls it a wall. Each describes the part he touches with total conviction. Each is right about the part, and wrong about the whole.
In the nineteenth century, the American poet John Godfrey Saxe (1816 to 1887) retold it as the English poem "The Blind Men and the Elephant", and carried the story across the Western world. The lesson has never aged: the part is true, and the whole is larger than any one touch.
Through our learning, our research and our daily practice, we have seen the same thing again and again: whichever occult tool we use, when it is narrowed down, it leads to the same result for the native.
The native does not behave differently because the method is different.
