What is a house?
Imagine your birth chart as a home with 12 rooms. Each room is called a house, and each room is about one part of your life: you, your money, your family, your work, and more.
The planets are like the people who stay in these rooms. When you know what each room is for, you can see where a planet is placed and what part of life it touches.
Houses are counted from 1 to 12. The 1st house is you, and the count goes on from there.

Four easy groups
Twelve is a lot to remember, so think of the houses in four groups of three.
| Group | Houses | In one line |
|---|---|---|
| Me and my money | 1st, 2nd, 3rd | Who I am, what I have, and how I express myself |
| Home and joy | 4th, 5th, 6th | Where I feel safe, what I enjoy, and my daily duties |
| People and change | 7th, 8th, 9th | Who I share life with, how I change, and what I believe |
| Work and letting go | 10th, 11th, 12th | What I achieve, who supports me, and what I release |
How to use this
- Pick one area of life you want to understand, such as work or marriage.
- Find its house in the table above (work is the 10th, marriage is the 7th).
- Look at which planet sits in that house in the chart, and read it using what you know about that planet.
A full reading looks at more than one house and more than one planet. Start with this single-house habit and add to it slowly.
Key takeaways
- A birth chart has 12 houses, like 12 rooms in a home.
- Each house is about one part of life.
- The 1st house is you; the 7th is partners; the 10th is career.
- Remember the houses in four groups of three.
- Houses show the area of life; planets show who is acting there.
Practise this
- Cover the table and write the simple name of each house from 1 to 12.
- Name the house for each topic: your best friend, your job, your savings, your home.
- Choose one house and write two sentences about what it means for someone you know.
- Share your answers in the Practice lab for feedback.
